Learners Abroad

There's more to it than just learning English. Students must also possess the skills that will enable them to succeed at school in a foreign country.

Many students are now choosing to go to another country to study. Some of the most popular destinations are the USA, Canada, the UK, and Australia. Students may go for as little as a few weeks to study at a language school, or for as much as three or more years to earn a diploma from a boarding school or a university. In doing so, the students will be able to learn a lot about the world outside their own country.

Before going abroad, students may need to take a number of classes first. Some schools overseas may require students to pass an English proficiency test, such as IELTS or TOEFL. Therefore, many students who were not born in an English speaking country have to take classes to improve their communications skills. Three of the sample lessons we provide here focus on the development of English reading and writing skills.

But there's more to study abroad than just learning English like some tourist. Students must also possess the skills that will enable them to succeed at school in a foreign country. So, we've included a lesson designed to sharpen students' study skills. We've also thrown in a couple of extracurricular lessons on reading for pleasurejust so students can take full advantage of any free time they might have.

In addition to English, students may also be required to study other subjects. They might need to take classes in subjects they will study in more depth overseas, or in order to earn a diploma in their own country first. Although the content of these classes may not be new for students, the language they are studied in could well be. As examples, we've included four lessons in economics, history, and geography.

Complete the lessons provided. They are not full courses. Students will often spend one or more years studying each of the subjects illustrated by these examples. However, they should give you some idea of what it's like to study in an English learning environment. These lessons can be done in any order you like.
